At the end of the day, it's about getting the job done safely, efficiently and hitting the targets that are set in front of you and when everyone works together, no matter if your male or female – these goals are easy to achieve."

“Don’t stop until you’re proud.”

Female Driver Academy Manager Chelsea English joined Cleanaway in February 2020 as a weighbridge operator and leading hand at South East Melbourne Transfer Station (SEMTS) in Dandenong South, Victoria.

Waste management has been in her family since before she was born, meaning Chelsea was exposed to the industry from a young age and always had an interest.

“Prior to starting my journey with Cleanaway, I was a transport and logistics recruitment manager for a global transport company but was looking for a change as I had been in the industry for six years. I recruited for Cleanaway back in 2016 so I was familiar with the values and the overall culture. I thought, why not jump into the operational side of things for a challenge? And here I am!” says Chelsea about how she came to work with Cleanaway.

Chelsea was eventually promoted to operations supervisor where she was tasked with ensuring that her team operated around Cleanaway’s foundations of health, safety and environment, and making sure that everyone went home safe.

“The best thing about being an operations supervisor is that not one day is ever the same. You will never have two days in a row where the same thing happens, so you are constantly on your toes! The role itself puts you into a position where you get to meet some amazing people within the business around the country who you can learn from and grow with.”

Pictured: Chelsea and the SEMTS team celebrating the facility’s 4th anniversary in 2021

“It doesn’t matter what role you are in – there are always going to be challenges. You may have a lot of deadlines that you need to meet, or you many have multiple breakdowns on site that effect your entire operation. Knowing that SEMTS was the biggest transfer station in the southern hemisphere and services the entire south-eastern suburbs, break downs were the biggest challenge.”

With challenge comes resilience and that’s exactly what Chelsea’s team demonstrated on the tough days.

“We all got around each other when times were tough, and we all pushed through because we knew we were in it together. When you have a good support network around you and you have a strong mindset, you can overcome anything!” said Chelsea.

Pictured: A “throwback” picture from three years ago with Chelsea and her teammates celebrating achieving their branch goals

Chelsea has had many interesting experiences over the last two years – so many she could probably write a short novel about them, she said with a laugh.

“I was settling into my evening one night about to have dinner when I received a phone call from the Victoria Metro South C&I Branch Manager, David Vong. He explained to me that a customer of his had thrown out a ring valued at around $70,000 and he had intercepted the truck before it was packed out.”

“He asked if there was chance that we could tip off somewhere inside the shed and search through a couple of tonnes of waste for the ring. Challenge accepted.”

“The next day the truck came in and we rolled up our sleeves and started digging through the waste. We were knee deep in all sorts of waste until we pulled out a bag with a bunch of mineral water bottle caps. Inside a bottle cap was the $70,000 ring!”

“I remember the excitement we all had. We were jumping up and down like children on Christmas morning! A needle in a haystack – and we found it!”

“For a little while I was nicknamed “Lord of the Rings.” I won’t lie… I’m kind of glad that didn’t stick.”

Chelsea’s experience being in a traditionally male industry has been positive. Although a little nervous when she started, the team that onboarded her were really welcoming and taught Chelsea the ins and outs of the machinery and what the operation looked like.

“I think that says a lot about the overall culture we have. I didn’t find there was really a difference for me being a woman. At the end of the day, it’s about getting the job done safely, efficiently and hitting the targets that are set in front of you and when everyone works together, no matter if your male or female – these goals are easy to achieve.”

As Academy Manager, Chelsea loves talking about Cleanaway’s first ever Female Driver Academy program because she believes in Cleanaway’s efforts to increase our diversity within the workplace.

Pictured: A few Female Driver Academy participants from the class of February 2022

“We are taking groups of women and providing them with the opportunity to jump into a new role fully supported for 12 months (and long after). We’re equipping them with the skills, knowledge, and licences they need to perform and succeed and we’re helping them to feel like they are a part of something bigger than just driving a truck,” said Chelsea about her experience with academy.

Outside of work, Chelsea loves catching up with friends on the weekends and celebrating the week with her mates. “I’m a huge supporter of the Hawthorn Football Club and before Covid, I would make sure I was at every home game! I also support Melbourne Storm in the NRL,” she adds with a smile.

Chelsea is also a bit of a videography pro having previously filmed live MMA, boxing and kickboxing tournaments.

"I'm proud that my employees feel comfortable and safe to ask their young daughters to work for such a great company."

Cleanaway Hillsdale has been actively recruiting women as part of our commitment to diversify our workforce and provide opportunities for women in the waste industry.

“We have many employees who recommend friends and family to Cleanaway so naturally, the fathers of our team reached out for their daughters to be considered through an interview process. I was happy to do this!” said Municipal Contract Manager Gary Flaxman.

Three father-daughter teams can be seen working at the Hillsdale Depot today – John and Tymekqwa Duckett, Beth and Mark Evans, and David and Zebolda Thomson. (Pictured below)

Tymekqwa is a rugby player for the Sydney Roosters, and says that Cleanaway’s support of her sport is one of the reasons she loves her job. “I was looking for a job after leaving high school last year and doing a cleaning job for a few weeks. My dad said ‘there’s a position coming up and they’re looking for a girl’. I’ve been doing it for about three months and I love it,” says Tymekqwa.

Her father John also works as a runner at Cleanaway, continuing a family tradition that dates back to her grandfather.

Beth and Zebolda are approaching their first six months working with Cleanaway and are still very much learning the ropes. Zebolda said with a smile, “I’m still getting used to it. This job is more physical than my previous employment at a fast-food restaurant.”

When asked what it’s like working with a family member, Beth said, “I work with my dad every day, and we have our moments!” Beth’s dad Mark is quite pleased with the arrangement, “She was looking for a full-time job and I wanted to spend more time with her.”

Zebolda doesn’t currently work directly with her dad as he runs a different route but she’s optimistic that they will eventually (and she looks forward to it).

Her dad David said, “I’ve been with Cleanaway for 10 years and I enjoy working for the company, so I thought it was a good opportunity for my daughter.”

Gary adds, “I am proud that my employees feel comfortable and safe to ask their young daughters to work for such a great company. I am sure they will go on to other jobs within the company, but it’s great to give them a start.”

Cleanaway Hillsdale supports the City of Sydney’s domestic waste needs as part of a seven-year contract to provide waste and recycling services. The depot works closely with council to help residents improve landfill diversion and recycling rates through our award-winning education team and collections network.

The story of Cleanaway’s Guildford Materials Recovery Facility (Perth MRF) is not unlike the story of the phoenix rising from the ashes.

A significant structural fire in November 2019 shut the facility until May 2021, when it was redesigned from the ground up and reopened with state-of-the-art recycling capabilities and fire safety upgrades in place.

Today, Perth MRF stands tall as one of our Prized Assets with the capacity to process 200,000 tonnes of recyclables per annum. This represents over half of Western Australia’s commingled recycling.

Central to Perth MRF’s tale of tenacity is its team, which recently won the 2021 Star Award for Team. Cleanaway’s Star Awards recognise and reward our most dedicated team members helping to make a sustainable future possible.

Here’s what Business Manager – Recycling Sang Chi had to say about his team’s win: “Cleanaway is a great company, so to receive a recognition like this is staggering.”

“The culture at the MRF is terrific and we are blessed for the opportunity that is continuously provided to work, learn and grow as a team!”

Well done once again to all members of the Perth MRF team!

The teams in our two NSW locations, South Coast and Silverwater, ensured uninterrupted service and community support in the face of the COVID-19 wave last year.

It was a monumental effort that required everyone to pitch in and support one another to manage a 50% uplift in waste volumes. This surge required changes to process flows, setting up of alternative sites and offload areas, and deployment of bin tipping and bin washing services in record time.

The teams also had to juggle their resources and assets while working to capacity.

Persistence was key in providing professional and friendly responses to the many requests coming through from customers across the whole of NSW.

We would like to congratulate all members of the South Coast and Silverwater teams for a job well done!

Sustainability is a guiding principle for many Cleanaway employees.

For Col Watson, however, it is a calling.

Col was recently named Winner for Sustainability in Cleanaway’s Star Awards, which recognise and reward our most dedicated team members helping to make a sustainable future possible.

Pictured: Col Watson, Winner of the 2021 Star Award for Sustainability

Maximum effort to minimise waste
Col is a Resource Recovery Officer at Cleanaway’s Centre for Sustainability, where she works with her customers to find opportunities to turn waste bound for landfill into valuable resources that can be recycled or reused.

According to her, education is an indispensable part of the equation.

“We help our customers understand how they can improve their waste practices and how recycling can assist them in achieving their sustainability goals.”

“We also help them see how this can also be a financial advantage, with the landfill levy so high.”

Relishing the challenge

Her past work in the health sector makes Col especially keen on helping her healthcare customers divert their waste from landfill.

It is a challenge this former nurse has firsthand experience with.

“Coming from the sector, I have a great understanding of the vast amounts and types of waste that is generated and how little is recycled.”

“While there are great opportunities for landfill diversion, it’s challenging to implement as most hospitals have little room to install extra bins for source separation.”

Reaching for the stars

Col continues to push the limits of sustainability through her work and research.
Apart from winning the 2021 Star Award for Sustainability, she counts an EPA grant to further a sustainability project as one of her favourite accomplishments.

“Winning the Star Award was a big accomplishment for me. I would also say that applying for and winning a grant from the EPA alongside my manager Theresa Troup was a big achievement.”

“I have not previously applied for a grant, so it was exciting to be selected by the EPA to receive funding towards our project.”

Some people have names that fit their jobs perfectly.

Alex Steel is one of them.

The Cleanaway key account manager, who services construction clients for our Solids team in Victoria, doesn’t just share a name with a common building material. He also shares a bond with the builders he works with, something he considers invaluable.

“Relationships are something that cannot be measured in money.” said Alex, who manages mid-market and large builders for skips and solid waste services.

“I’ve built friendships with a lot of my customers which changes the way we deal with each other.”

Through his people-centric approach, Alex continues to exceed the expectations of his customers and grow the construction business for the Solids team.

“Resource recovery is top priority for my builders. They want to see our resource recovery centres consistently make improvements to ensure that as much material as possible is recycled from every job.”

Alex, who was recently named Winner of the Star Award for Standout Salesperson, dedicates his win to his sales team and skips team. Cleanaway’s Star Awards recognises and rewards our most dedicated team members helping to make a sustainable future possible.

“I’m the first dedicated construction rep we’ve had in Victoria since I joined Cleanaway six years ago. If I had to highlight just one accomplishment, it would be being a part of the skips team that has nearly doubled in revenue growth over the last three years.”

“It makes me feel proud to know that we’re successfully growing this area as a team.”

Reinventing the accountant role

Reinventing the accountant role

Meet Alfio Auteri, a Service Champion who is on a mission to push the limits of his role as an accountant for Cleanaway.

Our People

Highlights

If there’s anyone who can prove that being an accountant isn’t boring, it’s Alfio Auteri.

Alfio was recently named Winner for Service Champion – Internal in Cleanaway’s Star Awards, which recognises and rewards our most dedicated team members helping to make a sustainable future possible.

This recognition has every bit to do with his attitude towards his role, which he has proudly made his own.

What’s worth doing, is worth doing differently

Although Alfio admits that traditional accounting is known to be “monotonous and repetitive”, as he candidly puts it, he’s inclined to push the limits of his role as a number cruncher.

“I get a lot of joy out of streamlining our processes and finding more efficient solutions for the business.” said Alfio.

“There are many examples of how I have delivered wins for the business through this approach. This includes assisting with inventory accounting for municipal bins, revamping reports for our weekly management pack, setting up regional balance sheets, and developing a tool to assist with budgeting and forecasting.”

Pictured: Alfio with Senior HR Business Manager Fiona Warnock (left) and General Manager David Clancy (right)

Why doing more matters

Alfio will be celebrating his third year with Cleanaway in March. In this relatively short time with the company, he has already made a lasting impression with his NSW Solids colleagues by going beyond the call of duty.

“My favourite part about working with Cleanaway is that I’m given the opportunity to participate in ad hoc assignments, while working alongside and being guided by a professional and knowledgeable team.”

“This in turn has enabled me to showcase my strengths and provide further value to Cleanaway.”

As an accountant, however, Alfio understands that transactions remain the focus of his daily tasks.

“My role as an accountant is all about ensuring the transactions we engage in every day are recorded correctly, in full and on time so that our financial results accurately reflect what is happening in the business.”

“The other key areas of my role are creating and interpreting financial reports, analysing data, and providing information to assist with key business decisions to improve our efficiency and effectiveness.”

Pictured: Alfio with Finance Manager Loan Anh (left)

How it feels like to win

“It’s a huge honour to be named a winner, especially considering the exceptional calibre of employees at Cleanaway. The Star Awards is something I value very highly and I’m extremely appreciative to be acknowledged for my work.” said Alfio.

“I’m very lucky to be part of such an accomplished, conscientious and supportive team. I truly believe that this is a major driver as to what motivates me every day.”

So, what would Alfio say to anyone who is considering nominating someone in the Star Awards?

“I would definitely encourage everyone to nominate someone for the Star Awards. Each person that is nominated receives a certificate and it is a huge compliment for a job well done.”

“The Star Awards is a great initiative for recognising, motivating and encouraging staff to constantly strive for excellence.”

As an operations coordinator, Rebecca Crouch deals with a lot of different people each day.

She wouldn’t want it any other way.

Rebecca was recently named Winner for Continuous Improvement in Cleanaway’s Star Awards, which recognise and reward our most dedicated team members helping to make a sustainable future possible.

It is a recognition that stems from the genuine passion she has for people.

“I was honoured just being nominated for the Continuous Improvement award but being announced the winner was unbelievable! I don’t do my job for recognition, but it is wonderful to know that my peers appreciate the work and effort I have been putting in.”

Pictured: Rebecca Crouch with Regional Operations Manager Daniel Martin

Rebecca has been with Cleanaway’s Hydrocarbons team at Dandenong South for two and a half years. In the course of her work, she finds purpose in developing relationships with the people she crosses paths with.

“I would describe my role as challenging, but there is lots of fun along the way. As a scheduler there are lots of variables, working with lots of different people each day to ensure our customers internally and externally are provided with exceptional service.”

“One of my favourite accomplishments to date is that I somehow managed to continue developing relationships with people, which wasn’t easy during the COVID-19 where I was scheduling remotely. I didn’t even meet any of the drivers face to face for over 18 months.”

Another aspect about working with Cleanaway that Rebecca is particularly proud of is learning more about waste.

“I came from the health sector and it never really occurred to me how waste can be safely disposed of or recycled.”

Rebecca’s message to anyone who is considering nominating someone in the Star Awards is powerful in its simplicity.

“Share people’s achievements. Let them know that they and their efforts are appreciated.”

He took over the problem, sourcing a safety data sheet on the chemicals and working with fire services to contain the spill and safely manage the clean-up.

It was for actions like this that Damien was awarded Cleanaway’s 2021 STAR Award for Customer Service Excellence.

The award capped a successful year for the man who, for 15 years, has led a small team at Cleanaway’s Port Douglas depot, which also achieved 5,000 days of working injury-free.
