“He looked up and came running so I opened the gate and, as soon, as he saw the truck he was beside himself."

Five-year-old Royce Warren is obsessed with rubbish trucks.

So when Adrian Griffiths pulled up outside his house in a Cleanaway truck as Royce celebrated his birthday last Saturday (11 September), it was a dream come true for the boy, who is autistic.

Adrian was only too happy to take a few hours out of his day to visit the family home in Maryborough in Queensland after receiving a request from Royce’s mother Kelly.

“He was on the jumping castle in the back yard when he heard the sound of the rubbish truck in the street,” Kelly recalls.

“He looked up and came running so I opened the gate and, as soon, as he saw the truck he was beside himself.

“He grabbed our neighbour’s bin, which was the closest one he could find, and pulled it out to the kerb near where Adrian parked the truck.”

Adrian continues: “I pulled up, blew the horn a few times and all of kids came running out with their parents. They were having a look around at the truck. I let him sit in the seat and he thought he was driving it but I made sure it was done safely.”

Kelly says Royce was diagnosed with severe autism at the start of the year and is only now just starting to talk.

“More than a year he’s had a fascination with trucks and diggers. He’s up and waiting for the bin man when he comes each Tuesday,” she says.

“He’s never had a birthday party before and my partner said ‘wouldn’t it be cool if we could get a truck to come out to the house?

“We had to pry his fingers off the steering wheel to get him out of the truck.”

“We’re so grateful to Adrian and Cleanaway because you made a little boy very happy.”

Adrian, who joined Cleanaway more than two years ago and has a three-year-old-son of his own, said he was happy to pay a visit to Royce’s birthday party on a day off.

He also handed out cardboard Cleanaway truck cut-outs and tiny blue wheelie bins as gifts to the birthday party guests, complementing the rubbish truck-themed cake prepared for the birthday.

“It made me feel really good,” Adrian says.

“What some of us take for granted, others think of as a luxury. If I can help somebody else, I will.”

Fraser Coast Branch Manager Scott Campbell paid tribute to Adrian as a “top bloke” who is willing to help others.

“He’s one of our model Cleanaway employees who lives up to all of our values including doing the right thing and making a difference,” Scott says.

Introducing a new employee to an organisation is a daily event across the world but how do you ‘onboard’ the boss during a lockdown?

It is possible but, as new Cleanaway CEO and Managing Director Mark Schubert is discovering, it requires a flexible and creative approach.

Even before he started in in his new role on 30 August, Mark was getting to know the Cleanaway business virtually.

This is no easy feat given Australia’s leading waste management company has more than 250 sites across the waste value chain from collections through resource recovery to treatment and disposal, in every state plus the Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory.

Although he will not see all locations in the short term, this site tour is all about helping Mark see and hear how our 6,500-plus people are working with our prized assets and infrastructure and fleet to help create a circular economy as part of our mission to make a sustainable future possible.

“My plan is to spend a lot of time listening, learning and seeing how Cleanaway works,” he says.

He has been dropping into Cleanaway sites around the country from his home office in Sydney, where he is bunkered down because of COVID-19 restrictions.

Mark has crisscrossed the nation so far with an itinerary that has included our:

  • Liquid and Technical Service (LTS) operations in every state
  • Industrial & Waste Services (IWS) team servicing our customer QAL in QLD, our IWS Kwinana site in WA, and the team aqua cutting on the Westgate Tunnel Project, in Victoria
  • Perth Material Recovery Facility (MRF)
  • Inkerman Landfill and Wingfield Resource Recovery Centre (RRC), in SA
  • Victorian Commingled Resource Recovery (VCRR) network, Melbourne Regional Landfill (MRL), Brooklyn RRC, and the Dandenong South East Organics Facility (SEOF)
  • Cleanaway Daniels at Silverwater
  • Erskine Park Transfer Station and Landfill, Hillsdale depot, and Eastern Creek Container Deposit Scheme, in Sydney
  • Hemmant Recycling and RRC, New Chum Landfill in Ipswich, Logan depot, in QLD
  • Hydrocarbons sites in Perth, SA and Melbourne and our three Hydrocarbons refineries.

And that is just to name a few!! 😊

Managers at each location have been taking him on virtual tours, holding their phones up to provide sound and vision while providing commentary and answering questions, as ‘spotters’ ensure the tours are conducted safely.

Mark regrets he has been unable to be there physically and, when covid restrictions lift, is looking forward to getting out and spending time with our teams.

“The plan has me getting around all the states and as many locations and teams as practical over the first few months. As restrictions ease, I will switch back to face to face,” he says.

“Cleanaway has an exciting future and I’m excited to be joining the Cleanaway team.”

Process Engineering Intern Kate Rowan is a Chemical Engineer from Sydney University who is currently fulfilling her bachelor’s degree requirements working as our intern for 8 weeks at Homebush.

Kate is working with our operations team to develop a program for bleeding high amine water into our aqueous process. This requires familiarisation with Homebush processes, lab testing and review of historical data.

Kate is also reviewing the hot oil boiler operation at Windsor comparing actual operation against its design conditions. “I have enjoyed my first 2 weeks at Homebush and am grateful to Cleanaway for their support and the opportunity to put into practice some of the tools I’ve learnt in my course”, says Kate.

Outside her studies, Kate is an elite rower and was the reserve for the women’s bronze medal winning quad scull at the Tokyo Olympics last month. Unfortunately for Kate, she was not a travelling reserve – so she watched the racing from Sydney.

Pictured: Kate is an elite rower and part of Australia’s Olympic reserve squad

When Kate is finished at Homebush, her home for the next 12 months will likely be the Centre of Excellence for women’s rowing at Nepean which is part of the National Institute of Sport. Kate will train there full-time and hopefully be picked in Australian crews racing in next seasons European World Cup Regattas.

The Cleanaway Lismore team recently participated in the Byron Bay Charity Walk as part of our Westpac Helicopter sponsorship. The Byron Bay Charity Walk is an annual event to raise funds for Westpac Helicopter, who provide a 24/7 aeromedical search and rescue service for the people of Northern NSW.

Seventeen Cleanaway team members with their family and friends completed the 12km walk to Broken Head Reserve under 3 hours. This is a remarkable feat, considering that the path included a 5km uphill climb with an elevation of 360 meters.

They are already preparing for next year’s event, with an eye towards completing the second route, a 24km walk to Lennox Head.

“I was looking for the next challenge in my career which would offer a better work life balance for myself and my young family. Cleanaway has so far been a step in the right direction!”

“I grew up in Terang and my family owned an egg farm, which had over 300,000 chickens. I spent my childhood helping my dad on the farm and learning everything there is to know about eggs – some would say I am an “Eggspert”.

Frank “The Tank” Milroy recently joined our Warrnambool team as Operations Supervisor, bringing his decades of experience working in and around farms, including an 11-year stint as tanker driver and transport scheduler in Allansford.

“In my role as lead scheduler I was in charge of over 500 farm pickups, a fleet of 50 milk tankers and 80 drivers. I have always had a passion for the transport industry and have developed along the way to enjoy the logistics side of this industry.” Frank explained about his background.

When asked what brought him to Cleanaway, Frank said, “I was looking for the next challenge in my career which would offer a better work life balance for myself and my young family. Cleanaway has so far been a step in the right direction!”

Frank quickly settled in with the team at Warrnambool, “My first impression of the team was that they were like a little close knit family. They were all so friendly, kind and seemed genuinely excited to meet me. I was very excited that I had cake and coffee for morning tea on my first day.”

As Operations Supervisor, each day starts with its own set of unique challenges that keeps Frank on his toes – just the way he likes it.

“My day starts with a coffee and morning briefing with Branch Manager Carl Moloney, where we set our goals for the day. Carl and I went to secondary school together in Noorat, I would never have thought we would both end up working together all these years later.”

“I then go through the pre-starts, checking drivers and truck maintenance updates. I then do a general check of the facilities and chat with the staff at the transfer station to check if there are any issues.”

“I like to check in with everyone face-to-face and build on the working relationships with the team. The day can involve many tasks including booking jobs, problem solving bin issues, truck issues, sourcing parts and products, the list goes on and on!” said Frank.

Frank enjoys the diversity of his role, the people around him and managing the sheer volume of waste collected. He encourages people to join the waste industry which Frank describes as an ever-evolving industry that can provide a vast range of career opportunities.

Frank’s point is well illustrated by the Warrnambool team’s recent efforts to increase recycling in the area. When they saw the volume of milk bottles used by cafes and shops, the team introduced a dedicated collection run for milk bottles alone, which meant a single stream of clean bottles sent for recycling and a lighter commingled recycling bin for business owners.

The team have also encouraged local businesses to recycle their cardboard through a dedicated bin by providing an incentive on rates.

Outside of work, Frank is a family man with three children aged 9, 7 and 4. He enjoys gardening, travelling, swimming, golf, cooking, mountain biking, tennis and spending time with his family. Frank can also be seen at the Warrnambool Lawn Tennis Club where he is the committee’s club treasurer.

“She’ll be right is the way I lead my life, meaning it is what is and don’t stress the small stuff.”

“I’m happy being a driver. My plan is to eventually work my way into the office and drive when they need me to."

From the cabin of her 14-tonne vehicle, Chelsea Carney is blazing a trail for women in the waste management industry as a garbage truck driver.

A rarity in a male-dominated industry, this female ‘garbo’ has received a positive response on the street since she took the wheel in May.

“If residents see me, sometimes they ask if they can take a photo. One said: ‘Yes girl, I am so happy to see you here’,” she says at the end of another long day guiding the $400,000 vehicle around the narrow streets of eastern Sydney.

Chelsea, 25, is one of five women working at the Hillsdale depot in Sydney but the only driver among them, with three others are working as runners, emptying bins into the trucks.

Pictured: Chelsea standing beside her daily ride

They have been recruited as Cleanaway continues to pursue its goals of increasing the diversity of its workforce, pursuing gender equality and empowering women and girls.

The number of women in operational roles increased by 49 in FY21, and remains at about six percent of the total workforce of more than 6,500.

She joined Cleanaway in late 2019 as a runner after learning about opportunities from her brother Beau, who also worked for the company as a driver at the time.

“I found out they were hiring. I applied as a loader. I thought that if you can drive a car, you can drive a truck, so I got my HR (heavy rigid licence),” Chelsea says.

She had been working in a variety of roles in the retail and auto industry before applying to join Cleanaway.

“I wanted a change in my career. My first thought was: ‘Am I able to do this job? Do I have the strength to be a garbo? After my first day, I thought: ‘This is not as hard as I thought it would be.’ The hardest part was trying to wake up at 3.30am. And trying to learn new areas. Every day was different, which was good,” she says.

“I’m happy being a driver. My plan is to eventually work my way into the office and drive when they need me to. It’s really been challenging, especially when it comes to tight lanes and you have cars parked on either side (of the road). It’s just a matter of asking the loaders to guide me.”

The support from colleagues at the Hillsdale depot has been gratifying.

“They always cheer me on. I have worked with a lot of men from the yard. They have gone back to the office and said I’m a really good driver. They have always said amazing things about me,” Chelsea says.

Obtaining her HR licence in March 2021 was a highlight of her time at Cleanaway so far.

“I was over the moon. I called my family and my partner. I was so eager to get out on the street. I just wanted to be a driver. On the Monday I said: ‘Can I start work today?’ The following Monday I started driving.”

“It’s good knowing I’m a girl working in a male (dominated) industry. It makes me feel content.”

"Eliminating lacerations to our hands, fingers and other parts of the body was our main objective," said Regional Manager Sean Blackburn.

In July 2021, Senior Health & Safety Business Partner Steven Patrick facilitated a workshop that focused on injury protection. The workshop was attended by Maintenance teams from Cleanaway’s Laverton North and Coolaroo sites, both of which are part of the Victorian Commingled Resource Recovery (VCRR) network.

The workshop focused on analysing actual injury data while looking at root causes and contributing factors. Participants were then split into smaller groups to work on separate areas of the data before bringing it all together at the end with agreed actions at the end of the workshop session.

Regional Manager Sean Blackburn said that “Eliminating lacerations to our hands, fingers and other parts of the body was our main objective.”

Branch Manager Edgar Hartmanis also commented on how great it was for the Maintenance teams to be able to get together and work on a common safety goal.
