Cleanaway CEO Vik Bansal calls for a national four bin system at AWRE 2020

Cleanaway CEO and Managing Director Vik Bansal called for a national framework to standardise bin systems at a recent forum with The Minister for the Environment Hon Sussan Ley MP and among other experts at the Australasian Waste and Recycling Expo 2020.

At the Australasian Waste and Recycling Expo virtual conference this month, Cleanaway CEO and Managing Director Vik Bansal reiterated Cleanaway’s support for the Government’s Recycling Modernisation Fund and explained the policy frameworks that must be in place before the benefits of the waste export ban can be fully realised.

“At all levels, the export bans are a good thing – socially, environmentally and economically. However, successful recycling policy comes down to three key factors – contamination, scale and logistics. It’s important that we clean up inputs to MRFs by ensuring a consistent national four bin system and a container deposit scheme in every state.” said Vik.

While Cleanaway has invested significantly in Material Recovery Facilities, the ability to scale our operations is impacted by the quality of material received.

Source separated recycling enabled through container deposit schemes and compliant use of four bin kerbside systems puts the responsibility on generators of waste to separate materials such as glass, plastic and cardboard at the point of disposal, which encourages a clean, high quality input of materials to sorting facilities.

While educating householders to put the right materials in the bin will still be necessary, Vik explained that having a policy framework in place through national bin standards is the first step to avoid mixed messaging and confusion.

Vik added that the industry’s ability to scale operations will be increased if infrastructure spend and procurement are linked so that the industry would know where the product was going and therefore where to invest.

Australasian Waste and Recycling Expo 2020
On day two of the conference, Cleanaway CEO and Managing Director Vik Bansal joined National Waste and Recycling Industry Council (NWRIC) CEO Rose Read and The Minister for the Environment Hon Sussan Ley MP in a discussion on the Recycling Modernisation Fund. The Fund is aimed to generate $600 million of recycling investment and drive a billion-dollar transformation of Australia’s waste and recycling capacity.

In the following session on the National State of Waste, Vik joined Assistant Minister for Waste Reduction and Environmental Management, The Hon Trevor Evans MP and other experts to discuss the impact of the waste export ban due to start 1 January 2022 and the new Recycling and Waste Reduction Bill.

Cleanaway is proud to feature new inspiring truck artworks created by students from across Narrabri Shire, Moree Plains Shire and Gwydir Shire. These artworks were created based on the theme “Be green, keep your recycling green” and were selected from the 2020 Truck Art competition run with respective councils.

Caitlyn Taylor from Narrabri High School won first place in the Narrabri Shire Truck Art Competition. Her artwork, which she described as being fun to draw, demonstrated clearly how simple it was to recycle and the environmental benefits. On one side, she drew waste going into the green bins with a green tick, and while waste on the other side on the ground with a big red cross.

In Moree Plains Shire, it was Annie who won first place. Her bright and gorgeous design clearly articulated how to recycle right and what items can and cannot go into the commingled recycling bin.

Six year old Annabelle Todd won the Truck Art competition in Gwydir Shire, with her artwork that emphasised the importance of sorting waste and recycling properly. When asked what she learnt about recycling from the competition, Annabelle said “That you can reuse what you put in the bin.”

The winning artworks are now featured on selected trucks throughout the respective councils, so keep an eye out for them during the weekly bin collection.

National Road Safety Week is an annual initiative to highlight the risk of road incidents and ways to reduce them. At Cleanaway this is even more significant with the number of drivers we have on the road, and the varied environments we operate in to provide an essential service.

Cleanaway teams from across Australia committed to making road safety a priority by pledging to drive so that everyone can go Home Safe every day, drive like their loved ones are on the road ahead and to remove all distractions while driving.

Our branches, offices and sites took the time to reflect on their safety commitment by signing pledges and displaying them on notice boards and in their vehicles.

Regional Manager Scott Collins visited our Industrial & Waste Services team in Karratha where the team made a pledge to “drive as if their loved ones were on the road ahead.” The team chose the pledge because it reflected the importance of family and how it is the cornerstone of all their lives in some way, shape or form.

The team signed a group pledge and each driver individually signed their own pledge as well. To remind them of their commitment to safety on the road, every driver will place the pledge in their vehicles throughout the week.

Cleanaway is proud to partner with Tangalooma EcoMarines, a not-for-profit organisation based in Brisbane who provides sustainability programs to 58 Primary and Secondary schools across Southeast Queensland. We have been proud sponsors of the EcoMarines program since 2017.

The Cleanaway Waste Warrior Challenge is an art competition where students compete to create the most imaginative art piece from the top three litter items found on their school grounds and local community.

We are pleased to share the winning creation from Banksia Beach State School. Their creation ‘Plastic Ocean’ was made from discarded soft plastic bottles, drink lids and packaging mesh.

The beautiful creation is a reminder about the impact plastic has on waterways in the local community and around the world. “We are on a mission to change the prediction that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.” wrote the Banksia Beach State School students in their winning submission.

Education Coordinators Elli Webb and Lauren Grimshaw recently attended The Wave, Tangalooma EcoMarines annual end-of-year celebration of all the environmental achievements of participating schools.

Although the event looked a little bit different this year with social distancing restrictions in place, it was great to hear from sponsors, government representatives and the wonderful EcoMarines students.

“The Wave is always an inspiring event to attend and gives great hope for the future sustainability of our earth through the dedication and passion of the Tangalooma Eco Marines,” said Education Officer Elli Webb.

Cleanaway is proud to award $50,000 worth of grants to five community groups in Melbourne, funded through our Melbourne Regional Landfill (MRL) Community Benefit Fund.

Launched in 2019, the MRL Community Benefit Fund is an annual grant to support local sustainability projects, welfare programs and wellbeing programs in community groups neighbouring MRL, located in Melbourne’s west.

The 2020 grant recipients are Western Emergency Relief Network (WERN), Burnside Heights Football Club, Caroline Chisholm Society, George Cross Football Club, and Caroline Springs Cricket Club. The recipients were selected by a review panel including councillors from Melton City Council and Brimbank City Council and Cleanaway’s Stakeholder and Community Engagement Manager, Olga Ghiri.

Olga said of the fund: “Cleanaway is delighted to provide funding to local initiatives. These five worthy groups have a huge impact on the communities in Melbourne’s west and we’re proud to contribute funds to help them continue providing support and engagement programs.”

Western Emergency Relief Network (WERN)
The WERN community aid program is run by Rotary Clubs across the West of Melbourne, collecting and redistributing second-hand furniture, bedding, electrical and whitegoods to assist refugees, victims of domestic violence, homelessness and mental health.

WERN assists an average of forty families each month and has more than 360 accredited case managers dedicated to delivering support services to people in need. The program was also one of the recipients in the 2019 MRL Community Benefit Fund.

Burnside Heights Football Club
Burnside Heights Football Club, also known as The Bears, is a community-based Australian Rules football club with a strong emphasis on junior player development.

Due to the shutdown of sport during the COVID-19 pandemic, the club has suffered a lack of income that would normally come from registrations and canteen and merchandise purchases. The grant money will enable The Bears to purchase uniforms for volunteers and provide jackets for players to wear while on the bench.

Caroline Chisholm Society
Caroline Chisholm Society provides support to pregnant women and parents of young children. The Society provides a range of programs for families in need, including counselling, housing, material aid, and maternal and child health assessments.

Cleanaway’s funding for the Caroline Chisholm Society will go towards running costs, practitioners, clinical supervision, and providing material aid to vulnerable women and children.

George Cross Football Club
Established in 1947, George Cross Football Club is a soccer club for players of a variety of ages. The club plays in Victoria’s State League Division 1, a regional, semi-professional league.

The club aims to achieve a better balance of male and female participation in soccer by introducing new female teams. The funding will support upgraded facilities, a new strength and conditioning program, and fully accredited coaches.

Caroline Springs Cricket Club
Caroline Springs Cricket Club was established in 2003 by local parents wanting to support the growing number of junior players looking to play cricket. Since then, the club has grown to include 180 members across six senior teams and 12 junior teams.

The team at Cleanaway’s Lismore branch in NSW is delighted to be supporting the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter Service. Over the next three years, Cleanaway will provide waste management support to the Service’s Ballina Op shop and operational base at Lismore Airport, as well as at charity events held throughout the year.

Shane Tildesley, Branch Manager, Lismore, Kempsey and Coffs Harbour NSW said it was a natural fit, with the Lismore helicopter’s flight path and Cleanaway’s operations both serving the same areas, “Both Cleanaway and the Lismore Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter Service operate in similar regions throughout Northern NSW, from Port Macquarie to the Queensland border. We are incredibly proud to be providing support to this essential service that saves lives in our local community.”

The Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter Service operates four AW139 helicopters between three operational bases (Belmont Airport, Lismore Airport and Tamworth Airport) and plays a critical role in providing safety and support to 1.5 million locals.

Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter Service CEO, Mr. Richard Jones OAM remarked, “It has been a difficult period for our Service in terms of our ability to fundraise due to COVID-19 which makes Cleanaway’s new support even more significant”.

Cleanaway CEO and Managing Director, Vik Bansal said, “It’s fantastic for Cleanaway to be able to support a fellow essential services provider and giving back to the local community in this way.”

“The Rescue Helicopter is on standby 24/7 and that’s thanks to the support of the community and companies like Cleanaway. Their waste management services will provide a major saving and we can’t thank the team enough for choosing to partner with our Service,” Richard said.

Having opened in December 2017 to service the NSW Return and Earn container deposit scheme, the Lismore team have quickly become part of the community. Now employing 12 Lismore locals and operating eight trucks, the team service customers throughout Yamba, Maclean, Lismore, Casino, Ballina, Lennox Head, Kyogle, Ocean Shores and Byron Bay.

The region has high rates of recycling through the Return and Earn reverse vending machine network and the Lismore branch is proud to provide collection and processing services as the network operator, through the TOMRA Cleanaway joint venture.

“I’ve been with Cleanaway for 15 years and I still love working with customers to find ways to improve their sustainability footprint.” Shane commented. “I pride myself on our commitment to customer service excellence, and it’s been exciting to bring our offering to Northern NSW and provide those customers with real choice and options in the market.”

The Lismore branch’s commercial service offerings include front lift, rear lift and hook lift general waste and recycling, skips and bulk bin rentals, and grease trap and septic waste services.

Cleanaway looks forward to continuing to work with our partners in the Northern NSW region to make a sustainable future possible.

On 15th August, Cleanaway’s Industrial Services team received a call from a key client to provide an emergency pump out service at the site of a large fire in Booragoon.

Led by Operations Supervisor Joshua Gard, Operators Richard Woods and Travis Rhodes, the team quickly mobilised within an hour and a half and worked alongside the fire department to prevent contaminated water from entering storm water drains.

Over the next two days, the team worked tirelessly to remove over 130 kilolitres of water from pits in the area surrounding 276 Leach Highway.

Key Account Manager Joanna Laughton thanked the crew for their work and said, “Our client was very happy with progress we made and that our pump out operations went smoothly according to plan. We’re pleased to have moved quickly to minimise any potential environmental impacts to the surrounding area and the local community.”

The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation tested the air quality and smoke fumes and the area was deemed safe later in the day.
