To combat the loss of millions of trees caused by the New England dieback, Every Tree Counts aims to build a 30km wildlife corridor, stretching from the Sumarez Ponds in the west to Dangar Falls in the east.

General Manager of Armidale Tree Group, Alicia Cooper explained that the project aims to address large-scale landscape and environmental issues across the New England region by raising funds, building partnerships, and managing projects.

“We have over 30 years experience and we were one of the organisations to pioneer the revegetation practices used in the New England and tablelands areas,” she said.

The team at Wingfield Liquids recently needed to replace an old liquid tanker body as it no longer complied with state regulations to cart liquid and hazardous waste.

Instead of sending the tanker body to be scrapped, Cleanaway’s workshop team from Solids in SA paired it up to a retired cab chassis and (with a few plumbing conversions) turned two old, worn out pieces of kit into an almost new water cart to be used for dust suppression at the landfill, saving tens of thousands of dollars and proving that all waste is a resource.

Cleanaway works with businesses all over Australia to maximise their recoverable and recyclable waste. For more information, visit our services page and contact us to make a sustainable future possible.

Missed pickups, broken bins, contamination –these are just a few of the things we’re helping our municipal customers better manage through the introduction of Cleanaview, launching in Noosa Council, QLD on 1 September, followed by The Hills Shire, NSW on 2 October.

Near real time information and visibility of our truck locations will help local councils answer queries from residents on the status of their bin pickup, and be informed when a scheduled job has been completed.

Cleanaview's map

Technology on-board Cleanaway vehicles will provide our customers with more meaningful information to help better manage the waste collected in weekly kerbside pickups.  Beyond helping councils to simply manage contamination, it means we’re arming our customers with information to allow them to take proactive steps and educate residents about what can and can’t be disposed of through their local collection, and how they can safely dispose of other materials.

Delivering benefits beyond our municipal customers, it will help improve the quality of recyclables delivered to our Material Recycling Facilities and reduce the amount of contaminated materials which end up in landfill.  Importantly it also means that we can ensure prohibited and potentially dangerous materials don’t end up in landfill, and can be safely disposed of.

In partnership with our municipal customers – Cleanaview is another way we are making a sustainable future possible.

Last night Central Coast Council announced that Cleanaway have successfully secured a 10-year contract to deliver essential waste management collection services to the area, with service beginning from 1 February 2018.

Under the 10 year agreement, Cleanaway will be delivering general waste, recycling and green waste collection services as well as six free kerbside bulk waste collection services per year for each residence. Cleanaway will also be rolling out 65,000 new 140 litre bins across the council.

Central Coast Council said they based their decision on Cleanaway’s service capabilities, experience, customer service, technology advances, equipment and local employment. As part of the contract Cleanaway will provide a dedicated operational team and call centre working out of a purpose built facility based on the Central Coast, as well as offering residents the option to book their bulk waste collection via the website or, for the first time, via a phone app.

Michael Sankey, Regional Manager – Sydney Municipal, said Cleanaway will be working closely with Central Coast Council to provide a superior level of customer service and keep employment in the area. “We’re excited to partner with Central Coast Council and provide a world class collection service to local residents.”

“We’ll be setting up a new facility, implementing operational teams, a call centre and some education resources so it will be a busy six months recruiting and putting the team in place. We’ll also be upholding the rate Council has previously negotiated with the Transport Workers Union for the existing drivers.”

Remondis will continue to deliver waste collection services to Central Coast Council until January 31 2018, with Cleanaway beginning operations from February 1.

Why container deposit schemes benefit the whole community

Why container deposit schemes benefit the whole community

Highlights

Container deposit, or refund schemes are simple; customers who return their drink containers to specific collection points will be refunded a small amount, 5 to 10 cents, per eligible container. The collected containers can then be sent to material recovery facilities to be recycled, and become new products and materials.

Every minute in Australia, 15,000 plastic containers are either sent to landfill or thrown away as litter. Container deposit schemes encourage people to collect their containers, rather than carelessly disposing in general waste – leading to more recyclable plastic in landfill – or worse still, litter. South Australia has the longest-running container deposit scheme and sees a 76.5% return rate for drink containers, and has a landfill diversion rate of about 80% across the board.

Container deposit schemes also increase recycling rates in the community which has the added bonus of raising money for local organisations, like the Scouts or primary schools. 13% of South Australians, for instance, choose to donate their containers directly to charity. Otherwise, it’s additional money in your pocket, and who doesn’t like that?

Container deposit schemes also result in reduced costs for local councils by reducing litter clean-up costs. And of course, they help to reduce the threat posed by plastic litter to our waterways and coastal marine environments.

The benefits of container deposit schemes are three-fold; the environment benefits with less litter in the parks and waterways. The community also benefits with more incentive to recycle and earn extra pocket money for community programs. And finally, recycled containers become part of a circular economy that extends the life of these materials and reduces our reliance on natural resources.

Highlights

Now in its 29th year, the Banksia Sustainability Awards continues to provide a positive platform to showcase the best in Australian innovation, invention and ingenuity in the all-important sustainability space.

Cleanaway is proud to be a sponsor of the Banksia Leadership in the Circular Economy Award. This award is an important way Banksia and Cleanaway are encouraging and rewarding innovative businesses that are enabling circular economies and closing the loop on recycling and resource recovery. By investing in new business models that are able to leverage waste as a resource, we will continue to make a sustainable future possible for generations to come.

Banksia Leadership in the Circular Economy Award

The Banksia Leadership in the Circular Economy Award recognises approaches that allow the Australian economy to develop within natural limits; preserving and enhancing natural capital, optimising resource yields and eliminating waste.

By recognising sustainable initiatives that work with waste as a resource, Cleanaway continues to encourage disruption and innovation through supply chain management, resource recovery and closed loop approaches. Cleanaway is looking for businesses that are committed to resource conservation, and waste reduction at key stages in the waste life cycle.

We encourage groups and enterprises from Government, business, community, educational institutions, individuals, social enterprises, not for profits and partnerships who are enabling a circular economy to enter the Banksia Sustainability Award.

“We are delighted to be working with Cleanaway in the circular economy field. Through the diversity of the Banksia Sustainability Awards we have the potential of cross-pollination of innovation from industry into other non-aligned groups and vice versa. This is exciting, we need to increase the spotlight on local innovation and continue to promote and encourage in order to truly embrace the notion of a clever country” says Graz van Egmond, CEO Banksia Foundation

“Through Cleanaway’s partnership with the Banksia Foundation we are working towards capturing the nation’s best and are asking Australian companies, organisations and individuals to put their hand up and be assessed by Banksia’s expert judging panel. We need to do this (recognise and reward) so that we can assure all Australians that progress is being made and to show how sustainability initiatives can be replicated.” Richard Pittard, Head of HSE Cleanaway added.

2016’s winners, TIC Group, is an Australian owned company with circular economy principles embedded in its operation and design. Beginning with a world first hanger re-use program for Australian retailers in 1989, 2016 saw TIC launch Australia’s first automated mattress deconstruction plant. As a company that is built on innovation, TIC creates bespoke solutions that deliver process efficiency, environmental outcomes and reduce operational costs, whilst allowing customers to focus on their core business.

TIC has innovation in mind and sustainability at heart, a combination that allows them to find gaps in the market and create transformational change that questions day to day processes. TIC began by transforming the way retailers and manufacturers use garment hangers, now its offer has extended to a range of solutions for managing store returns (creating a sustainable pathway for re-use, re-purposing of products), online order fulfilment, in-store marketing solutions, solvup product repair & troubleshooting software platform, automated mattress deconstruction and medical equipment supply. TIC Group is The Ideas Company, developing smarter business design and technology to extend product lifecycles.

A decade of kNOwing Waste in NSW

Cleanaway’s kNOw Waste education program is celebrating teaching its 150,000th student this week.

For a decade, Cleanaway, Australia’s preferred kerbside waste and recycling contractor has been making a sustainable future possible through the kNOw Waste™ Schools and Community Education Program.

Aimed at encouraging the development of short and long-term environmental behaviour change, the kNOw waste program promotes effective waste management and key environmental values to support classroom learning.

Highly qualified teachers deliver the kNOw waste program for students from preschool to secondary school and deliver messaging around the importance of the correct use of their household kerbside recycling and waste services.

The kNOw Waste highlights the importance of understanding how the local council provides kerbside waste service through teaching a range of modules focussed on sustainability.

Michelle Mandl-Keating, Education Manager NSW explains our most popular module in preschool is called ‘Natures Recyclers’.

“We provide a really ‘hands on’ experience for students that teaches them how worms and other composting creatures are responsible for an essential natural recycling process,” Michelle says.

“Kids have the opportunity to see a live worm farm and feed the worms, as well as meet our Tropical North QLD Giant Burrowing Cockroach, Bernadette.

“In primary schools we find from the perspective of our councils and schools that our ‘Litter Litter module’ is important to students understanding.

“Recognizing the litter produced at school or outside of school has an impact beyond the area it occurs is an important understanding for students of this age.”

The future of the program is cemented in the fact that Australians are some of the highest waste producers in the world.

This means teaching our children from an early age that they have responsibilities and the capacity to effect positive change in their immediate environment is really important.

The 150,000th student was taught at Ashbury Kidz Academy, a preschool within council partner Canterbury Bankstown City Council.

A celebration included games, prizes and a visit from a Canterbury recycling collection truck.

Cleanaway have been delivering the kNOw waste education program to schools and communities since 2005.

Highlights

Cleanaway is delighted to announce a multi-year, national partnership with Clean Up Australia, one of Australia’s best known community organisations, focussed on mobilising the community to clean up and conserve our environment.

Started in 1989 as an initiative to clean up Sydney Harbour, Clean Up Australia now attracts nearly 1 million volunteers at various Clean Up events across the year.

Cleanaway’s CEO, Vik Bansal said “For many years, Cleanaway teams across the country have supported Clean Up activities in their local communities, and we are excited to formally join forces with Clean Up Australia as a major national partner”.

Of the partnership, which will run from 2016 until 2019, Mr Bansal said “Whilst our businesses are quite different, our missions are strongly aligned – we are both working toward a more sustainable future”.

“We are committed to a true partnership with Clean Up over the next four years, and I know that we will have more Cleanaway staff involved in upcoming Clean Up events, than ever before”.

“I know that many staff are extremely passionate about Clean Up, and they are very excited about Cleanaway formalising our support to this great Australian organisation. In fact Ian Kiernan is a hero to many of our people – people who have been in the waste management industry for decades and who are very passionate about what they do.” Mr Bansal added.

Clean Up Australia Founder and Chairman, Mr Ian Kiernan AO said “It’s a great partnership. Clean Up is very democratic – it is owned by all Australians.  They choose the sites, they provide the volunteers.  That’s a great strength, and through this partnership, we can further support communities right across Australia”.

Over the last 26 years, volunteers have donated more than 31 million hours caring for the environment through Clean Up activities, removing the equivalent of more than 331 thousand ute loads of rubbish from nearly 166 thousand locations around Australia, demonstrating that Australians are willing to roll up their sleeves and act to help care for the environment.

Mr Kiernan said “Clean Up Australia is not just focussed on our major ‘Clean Up’ activities across the year – but on changing behaviour and doing things differently in the future. We are very excited to partner with Cleanaway, working alongside their teams to continue doing what we do, with new opportunities to grow and expand our activities.”

“Our new major partner is a company with a strong focus on resource recovery, in all its forms, to create a more sustainable future, and we look forward to working closely with them over the coming years and build a stronger alignment between our two organisations” added Mr Kiernan.
