Almost no problem is too difficult to solve for Newcastle service technician Victor Abramow.

His ability to help get to the bottom of equipment cleaning issues has earned him plaudits from a range of customers for exceptional service.

Victor works in the Cleaning Equipment Services area of the Liquid Waste and Health Services business unit, specialising in parts washers such as turbo washers, hot tanks and solvent sinks.

He joined Cleanaway about 10 years ago with about 15 years’ experience in the metal recycling industry but insists he is ‘self-taught’.

“I like challenges. I like things that are not the norm. When something breaks down and I help fix it, I get a great feeling of accomplishment,” Victor says.

He applies a methodical approach of speaking to the customer, suppliers and Cleanaway staff and then ‘brainstorming’ to find a solution.

Establishing a rapport with people is a key element of this approach.

“Customer service is making sure you’re listening to the customer, getting all the information you need to be able to fulfill their requirements,” he says.

“The important thing is to care. If you don’t care, you only do what you have to do. It may not be enough.

“If a part isn’t cleaned to a customer’s expectation, I will investigate and keep going until it is so we can return the machine to them.”

A case in point is at UGL in Newcastle where he spent the best part of two weeks investigating a leak in a new turbo washer.

A remote camera was deployed and seals were checked but ultimately the problem was found to be a wrongly fitted manifold, which was promptly removed.

The customer was pleased and, although Victor appreciated the positive feedback, that was not his motivation.

“I don’t go out there get a pat on the back. I want to be the best I can be,” Victor says.

After a decade with Cleanaway, he knows this remains the job for him, saying: “It’s a keeper”.
