Overview
South East Melbourne Transfer Station (SEMTS) is a commercial and municipal waste transfer facility that serves the region’s growing population. One of Cleanaway’s largest transfer stations, it processes general, construction and demolition waste from Melbourne’s south-east corridor, exclusively for businesses and industrial facilities. Built to meet the demands of an expanding population, the transfer station aligns with Victoria’s long-term Statewide Waste and Resource Recovery Infrastructure Plan (SWRRIP) by playing a critical role in the state’s ongoing management of waste.
We accept general waste, construction and demolition waste and timber. All waste types are rated and charged on entry. Medium-density fibreboard and construction and demolition waste are charged at inert waste rates.
As part of Cleanaway’s commitment to resource recovery, we are proud to separate waste material for recycling and divert it away from landfill wherever possible.

How it works
Acting as a consolidation point, the site receives waste from councils, businesses and the community before transporting it to Cleanaway’s Melbourne Regional Landfill for safe and compliant disposal.
Purpose-built for safety and efficiency, the facility incorporates:
- Long range RFID automated weighbridges for fast, accurate vehicle processing.
- High-capacity trailers for transporting waste, speeding up processing and reducing emissions.
- Nine commercial unloading bays to accommodate multiple customers at once, minimising wait times.
- A Columbia Tipper system for quick, safe and efficient unloading of waste from trailers.
- Environmental safeguards, such as fully bunded 100kL leachate tanks with a three-stage filtration process to prevent contamination.
This combination of innovative systems ensures the site operates safely and efficiently, while minimising its environmental impact.
Benefits for councils and businesses
- Safe and compliant waste management, with advanced fire protection and environmental controls.
- Faster turnaround times and reduced transport costs, lowering overall emissions.
- Support for regional growth, providing long-term waste solutions aligned with Victoria’s Statewide Waste and Resource Recovery Infrastructure Plan.
Beyond the building

Made for heavy traffic
All vehicles entering SEMTS will do sovia a custom-built traffic management control system, optimising the flow of traffic across the site, utilising separate entrance points for commercial vehicles to ensure efficient transitions.

Built for safety
The site incorporates an advanced fire protection system, including internal water cannons, sprinkler systems and a 24/7 thermal imaging platform with real-time notifications, ensuring safety of staff, customers and surrounding communities.

Optimised for environment management
Comprising 4,600m² of floor space, the site features a 10-compartment ventilation system to control dust and odour. It also incorporates sustainable water management, including 100kL onsite tanks which capture rainwater for use in amenities and gardens.
