Key Takeaways:

  • Olympic rower Kate Rowan joins Cleanaway’s Internship Program
  • Kate’s internship includes hands-on experience with aqueous processing and boiler performance
  • Program highlights Cleanaway’s support for emerging talent and elite athletes

Process Engineering Intern Kate Rowan is a Chemical Engineer from Sydney University who is currently fulfilling her bachelor’s degree requirements working as our intern for 8 weeks at Homebush.

Kate is working with our operations team to develop a program for bleeding high amine water into our aqueous process. This requires familiarisation with Homebush processes, lab testing and review of historical data.

Kate is also reviewing the hot oil boiler operation at Windsor comparing actual operation against its design conditions. “I have enjoyed my first 2 weeks at Homebush and am grateful to Cleanaway for their support and the opportunity to put into practice some of the tools I’ve learnt in my course”, says Kate.

Outside her studies, Kate is an elite rower and was the reserve for the women’s bronze medal winning quad scull at the Tokyo Olympics last month. Unfortunately for Kate, she was not a travelling reserve – so she watched the racing from Sydney.

When Kate is finished at Homebush, her home for the next 12 months will likely be the Centre of Excellence for women’s rowing at Nepean which is part of the National Institute of Sport. Kate will train there full-time and hopefully be picked in Australian crews racing in next seasons European World Cup Regattas.
