Cleanaway opens Australia’s most advanced Material Recovery Facility in Western Sydney

Cleanaway Waste Management Limited (Cleanaway) is pleased to announce the opening of its state-of-the-art Western Sydney Material Recovery Facility (MRF), in Rooty Hill today.

In a leap forward for the recycling and circular economy capabilities of Sydney and NSW, Cleanaway’s MRF will house advanced optical sorting technology, having the capability for up to 99.5% purity across recovered recycled material.

The new facility will improve the quality and increase the volume of resources recovered from NSW’s commingled recycling. Using advanced technologies such as ballistic separators, optical sorting based on colour and shape, eddy currents, magnets, and wind sifting, the MRF will process up to 120,000 tonnes of commercial and residential recyclables per year.

Together with Cleanaway’s collection and post-collection assets, the MRF enables Cleanaway to offer a fully integrated solution to its customers in NSW. Cleanaway’s recycling efforts will make a significant contribution to building a domestic circular economy in Australia.

Cleanaway is proud to have Blacktown City Council as a foundational partner in the facility.

Mark Schubert, CEO and Managing Director of Cleanaway, called the Western Sydney MRF a “gamechanger for Sydney”.

Mr Schubert said: “The MRF is a best-in-class Cleanaway asset that will set a new standard for fire safety, environmental control and resource recovery. This new facility directly supports the recycling needs of our growing population while advancing circularity in NSW. Cleanaway has invested in the most advanced equipment and infrastructure enabling the company to achieve some of Australia’s highest material recovery and purity rates.”

Located within Sydney’s growth corridor, Rooty Hill, the MRF will play a crucial role in strengthening the wider industry’s capacity to recover recyclables. For example, plastics from the MRF will be pelletised, to create high-quality food-grade resin for reuse in plastic containers and packaging, such as soft drink bottles and yogurt containers, through our partnership with Circular Plastics Australia in Altona and Laverton.

The Western Sydney MRF aligns with Cleanaway’s Blueprint 2030 strategy, which focuses on integrating and expanding a leading network of infrastructure assets to deliver seamless service, and value for customers.
