Cleanaway Waste Management (Cleanaway) has partnered with global technology company Bridger Photonics (Bridger) to measure methane emissions across Cleanaway’s landfill sites, using advanced technology. This partnership will provide Cleanaway with a clearer picture of where methane is emitted, helping Cleanaway to target emissions reduction initiatives.

The collaboration follows recent changes by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water (the Department) to a landfill reporting methodology (Method 2) enabling landfill operators to use direct measurement to report methane emissions from landfills.

Cleanaway’s Executive General Manger for Strategy and Mergers and Acquisitions, Frank Lintvelt welcomed the changes.

“Cleanaway congratulates the Albanese Government and the Department for modernising Method 2 and enabling the use of technologies such as Bridger Photonics’ advanced methane detection capability.

"Method 2 gives Cleanaway a clearer picture of how much methane each of our landfills are actually emitting, rather than relying on standard estimates.

“This means we can pinpoint where emissions are coming from and take practical steps to reduce them, such as improving landfill cover and making gas collection systems work more effectively.” Mr Lintvelt said.

Cleanaway has already demonstrated the potential of this approach at Melbourne Regional Landfill, where Bridger Photonics’ technology was used to identify and quantify methane and inform targeted repairs and operational improvements. This reduced more than 80% of the emissions identified for reduction.

Bridger uses state of the art laser technology to detect and pinpoint emissions across entire landfill using sensors attached to drones. The result is a complete, site-wide view of emissions and their sources.

"We're proud to partner with Cleanaway on this work," said Joel Baller, Chief Operating Officer at Bridger Photonics. "Cleanaway is setting the standard for how the waste industry approaches methane measurement. We’re providing them a real measurement of what's leaving each site, giving the clarity needed to turn good intentions into real reductions."

“Reducing methane emissions from landfill is an important part of Australia’s commitment to the Global Methane Pledge, and accurate measurement is critical to identifying opportunities for meaningful reductions.

This partnership between Cleanaway and Bridger Photonics demonstrates how government policy, innovative technology and industry action can work together to identify emissions and deliver practical reductions.” said Mr Baller.
