What is the NSW Bin Trim Program?

Bin Trim is a NSW Government program administered by the NSW Environment Protection Authority that helps eligible small and medium businesses improve how they separate waste, reduce contamination, and increase recycling and organics recovery. The program focuses on practical, onsite assessments and follow up support to identify where recyclable and food organic materials are being lost to landfill and how to optimise it.

Cleanaway supports eligible businesses in the NSW Northern Region (Lake Macquarie, Newcastle, Maitland and Singleton) to participate in the Bin Trim program by providing a compliant organics (FOGO) collection service, supported by Bin Trim assessments, education, and contamination management tools. This service is designed to help businesses correctly separate food organics, improve recycling performance, and meet NSW Government waste reduction objectives.

Why Divert Food Organics from Landfill

For many businesses, food and organic waste makes up a significant portion of the general waste stream. When food organics are not separated, they contribute to potentially higher disposal costs, unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions and contamination issues such as when recyclable paper, cardboard, and plastics are soiled, causing otherwise recyclable materials to be sent to landfill.
Diverting food organics through a dedicated organics service helps businesses:

  • Reduce landfill disposal costs by removing heavy, high volume organic waste from general waste bins
  • Lower contamination risks in recycling and general waste streams
  • Support compliance with current and emerging NSW EPA FOGO separation requirements, helping businesses align with mandated waste diversion obligations and reduce regulatory risk.
  • Demonstrate environmental responsibility to customers, staff, and stakeholders
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions from food waste sent to landfill

The Bin Trim program focuses on practical changes that deliver measurable improvements, making food organics diversion one of the most effective actions businesses can take.
