Comprehensive
Sharpsmart features and benefits

Our Sharpsmart system is transforming how sharps waste is stored and collected. Manufactured in Australia, the system has been shown to reduce container-related sharps injuries by 87%*. And because it’s reusable, it drastically reduces the amount of plastic disposable sharps containers that are incinerated or sent to landfill each year.
*Results from the largest international study of sharps containment systems were published in 2003 in the British Journal of Hospital Infection.
Sharpsmart has been engineered with a range of innovative features:
- Wide opening: The lid opening accommodates large sharps while minimising disposal-related injuries and restricting hand access to the contained waste
- Maximum strength: The medical-grade hardened plastic casing is impenetrable by contained sharps
- Clearview window: This unique feature identifies the fill level of the collector
- Eliminates overfilling: Once the collector is full, the in-built safety tray is activated into an upright closed position to restrict access
- No leak: A liquid seal fixed around the rim of the collector lid eliminates leakage of bodily fluids during transport
- Tamper-proof side locks: This safety feature prevents unauthorised access to the container contents

What happens to sharps waste and disposal containers
Sharpsmart containers, on the other hand, can be safely reused more than 500 times thanks to Cleanaway’s groundbreaking robotic washline. This innovative system delivers the highest level of medical container decontamination, with full automation to enhance safety and efficiency. Each year, it processes over 1.2 million Sharpsmart containers across biomedical, pharmaceutical, cytotoxic, anatomical and clinical waste streams, diverting nearly 3,500 tonnes of plastic from landfill.
