General waste includes non-recyclable materials that cannot be recovered or repurposed through standard recycling or processing methods and are typically sent to landfill.
At Cleanaway, we treat landfill as the last resort, and only use it when options like reuse or recycling have been exhausted. To reduce landfill reliance, many governments apply landfill levies to encourage better resource recovery—and we help our customers avoid unnecessary disposal costs by managing waste smarter.
We also offer comprehensive waste stream and bin health checks, working closely with you to identify recycling opportunities.
Soft plastics and non-recyclable packaging
Includes soft plastics, complex non-recyclable packaging, and hygiene or personal care items that are either contaminated with organic material or designed for single use, making them unsuitable for recycling through standard systems.
General clean-up waste
Covers broken or composite items that cannot be separated into recyclable components, along with everyday workplace or household waste that does not fit into recycling, organics, or hazardous waste categories.

What do we do with your general waste
While recycling and recovery efforts continue to grow, some residual waste still requires safe and responsible disposal. Cleanaway’s engineered landfill network provides the final step in the waste management process for materials that can’t be reused, recycled or recovered.
Our landfill sites are operated under strict local, state and national regulations, with rigorous environmental controls in place to protect surrounding communities and ecosystems. We hold the appropriate licenses to accept a wide range of waste types, depending on the landfill. We can accept waste such as putrescible waste from municipal collections, commercial and industrial waste, and construction and demolition materials.
Many of our landfills are equipped with advanced gas capture systems that can convert greenhouse gases into renewable energy—turning waste into a valuable resource and reducing greenhouse gas impact.
When a landfill reaches capacity, Cleanaway leads the remediation process, transforming the site for future community use—such as public green space or parkland—supporting our commitment to long-term environmental stewardship.

Sustainability
Our target
Reducing our greenhouse gas emissions from landfill.
Methane emissions from our landfill sites make up nearly 72% of Cleanaway’s entire greenhouse gas emissions. We’re working to reduce these emissions by improving our landfill gas capture and converting captured methane into lower carbon intensity energy such as renewable electricity. In FY24, we improved the efficiency of landfill gas capture by 12.5% across our landfill sites, substantially reducing methane emissions. By 2030, Cleanaway aims to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 43% and methane emissions by 34%, compared to FY22 baseline figures.

What general waste becomes
Cleanaway is committed to minimising the environmental impact of residual waste that ends up in landfill. When waste breaks down, it produces greenhouse gases like methane and carbon dioxide. We have engineered many of our landfill sites to capture and destroy this landfill gas and can turn it into energy. For example, in FY25 we powered the equivalent of 37,000 average Australian homes through energy generated from our landfill gas.
