Cleanaway welcomes Recycling Victoria’s Waste-to-Energy cap allocation
Cleanaway welcomes today’s announcement by Recycling Victoria that Cleanaway has been allocated a Waste-to-Energy cap licence for the Melbourne Energy Resource Recovery Centre (MERC).
Following a cap licence EOI process by Recycling Victoria, to set a limit on the amount of permitted waste that can be processed Waste-to-Energy facilities annually, Cleanaway has been allocated 760,000 tonnes per annum.
Waste-to-Energy offers a safe, reliable, environmentally friendly solution for managing non-recyclable waste. It safely processes waste that cannot be recycled, reducing the amount sent to landfills. Waste-to-Energy is widely practiced internationally, particularly across Europe and other developed countries.
“Waste-to-Energy is an essential pillar in the transition to a more sustainable and resilient waste management system in Australia,” said Preet Brar, Executive General Manager – Energy from Waste at Cleanaway.
The MERC has the potential to act as a catalyst for a more sustainable industrial future when co-located with partners, transforming it from a standalone facility into an energy recovery hub for low-carbon, circular solutions.
“When co-located with energy-intensive partners, such as manufacturing or water treatment facilities, the EfW facility can directly supply thermal energy (including electricity, heat and steam), creating a shared infrastructure that lowers costs, improves efficiency, and reduces environmental impact.” said Ms Brar.
Cleanaway is committed to working with the local community openly and transparently. We know that building trust takes time, and we are determined to demonstrate that MERC will be a facility designed with the community’s expectations and will continue to seek the approvals from our existing processes.
