Cleanaway enters into an agreement with Acciona to divert waste from WA landfills
Today Cleanaway announced a long term agreement with Acciona to supply waste feedstock for the Kwinana Energy Recovery Facility.
In October 2025, Cleanaway entered into a long-term agreement with Acciona to supply waste to the Kwinana Energy Recovery Facility, harnessing Energy from Waste (EfW) technology to divert waste from landfills while recovering valuable resources.
Cleanaway believes that EfW plays a key role in the waste value chain and transitioning to a circular economy, providing a long-term solution for waste that cannot be diverted from landfill and delivers a superior environmental solution compared to landfill.
Ms Rebecca Reeves, Cleanaway’s General-Manager for WA/NT/SA Solids Waste Services, said “This long-term agreement with Acciona is great news for Cleanaway’s customers sustainability targets and at the same time will help the WA Government achieve their landfill diversion target of sending no more than 15% of waste to landfill by 2030.”
EfW provides the opportunity to recover resources that would otherwise be lost if landfilled. These opportunities include the reduction of methane generated from waste disposed of to landfill, the generation of electricity, displacing carbon dioxide released through fossil fuel-based electricity generation, and after thermal treatment, EfW facilities recover ferrous and non-ferrous metals for recycling, and aggregates from inert material such as glass, ceramics suitable for construction applications.
“Waste is no longer viewed as having no value, waste is now recognised as a valuable resource that can be recovered, reused or recycled. I look forward to our growing relationship with Acciona and making a sustainable future possible, together.” said Ms Reeves.
Scott Reynolds, General Manager at Kwinana Energy Recovery reinforced the value this partnership will bring to the local community.
“We are excited to be partnering with Cleanaway to reinforce KER’s commitment to reducing waste, improving recycling outcomes, and creating long term value for our community and stakeholders. Together we bring extensive industry knowledge and a shared focus on innovation to deliver smarter, more sustainable outcomes and drive the move to a more circular economy.” said Mr Reynolds.
