Environmental Management

Cleanaway is dedicated to making a sustainable future possible. We do this by providing environmentally beneficial and sustainable services, products and solutions to customers and our local communities that result in reduction, resource recovery, recycling and reuse of waste materials.

We see all waste as a resource and use our facilities and processes to transform it into valuable commodities.

We are continually looking for ways to improve our environmental standards for the benefit of the environment, our employees, stakeholders and the community. We believe that the highest standards in environmental performance are crucial to the success and sustainability of our business.

To assist us achieve the highest standards in environmental performance we conduct our business in accordance with our environmental management system. This system has been independently certified to meet the requirements of International Standard for environmental management ISO 14001, and is underpinned by the Cleanaway Environmental Policy.

Reducing carbon footprint
As Australia’s leading waste management and recycling company, we continue to take action on climate change by reducing our greenhouse gas emissions, by the responsible management of our landfill gas, and by assisting our customers’ and the community in managing their waste impacts.

Emissions generated through our landfills presents the most significant source of greenhouse gas from our operations – they contribute approximately 70 per cent of our total scope 1 emissions. Our focus on recycling, getting more value out of each tonne of waste, as well as our continued investment in landfill gas projects such as renewable energy generation, has reduced our total emissions year on year.

In 2022, we began trialing two hydrogen fuel cell vehicles as part of Australia's most ambitious hydrogen mobility project. Compared to traditional diesel vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles produce zero carbon emissions and burn cleanly without compromising operational range.

The trial with Viva Energy Australia will enable us and our partners Toll Group, ComfortDelGro Australia (CDC) and Barwon Water to explore the performance, impact and real-world experience of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) for fleet owners and operators in Australia. This cross-industry project was made possible by a grant from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), as part of ARENA's Advancing Renewables Program.

We are equally committed to working with our customers to reduce their carbon footprint, and offer innovative and sustainable waste management solutions to our customers that work toward making a sustainable future possible.
