Cleanaway was contracted by the Aged Care Taskforce to support the safe management of the extraordinary amounts of medical waste generated during the pandemic from the aged care sector.
Due to the volume of medical waste generated during the height of the pandemic and the way customers approached waste disposal it was necessary for there to be some manual handling.
Cleanaway’s standard operating procedures for handling medical waste, including the wearing appropriate personal protective equipment, are well established and consistent with the guidelines set out by the relevant authorities. In certain circumstances these procedures allow for, and necessitate, the decanting of medical waste by hand.
Cleanaway takes seriously our regulatory obligations and works to operate in compliance with EPA limits at our Cahill Street site, including during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Through following the established procedures no Cleanaway employee suffered any cross contamination from medical waste handling nor suffered any adverse health effects.
