Over the last eight years, we’ve worked with Fresenius Kidney Care to divert over 21 tonnes of plastic from landfill and incineration by using reusable plastics instead of single-use plastics.
Previously, the biggest challenges for Fresenius was the incidence of needlestick injuries when disposing of sharps, and the manual handling and transportation of clinical waste.
With Sharpsmart and Clinismart reusable containers, safety, productivity and sustainability improved at Fresenius. Clinismart enabled teams to conduct up to seven dialysis sessions before needing to swap out containers and they were turning over approximately four times the number of single-use plastic sharps containers when compared to Sharpsmart.
Quality & Infection Prevention & Control Manager for Fresenius Kidney Care Carolyn Chenoweth said, “Working in healthcare and trying to ensure effective infection prevention and control often means a lot of clinical waste is generated. Using the Clinismart and Sharpsmart containers meant we could improve our infection prevention and control, and work health and safety, with the added benefit of being environmentally sustainable.”
The Cleanaway Daniels team also conducted regular onsite training tailored to each site’s physical space and local requirements.
Cleanaway Daniels Key Account Manager Christopher Nicoalides said, “We offer each site an in-service training, which gives the Fresenius team members the opportunity to understand the safety, and environmental benefits involved around the implementation of our solutions. This in-service also assists each site to better manage all of their waste management solutions through our “sort it out” training. “
“With the current environmental challenges that we face across the world, eliminating single use plastics has such a positive impact upon our environment, especially when you consider that we have years of data that promote the positive impact that Fresenius Kidney Care have made.
Fresenius also switched from hard plastic five litre bottles to soft plastic bags to reduce the weight of plastics involved in their dialysis treatments. They are also working closely together with Deakin University to turn discarded plastic dialysis waste into more durable concrete.
In recognition of their efforts, Fresenius was recently awarded a Certificate of Sustainability by Cleanaway Daniels.
