Having recently passed her HR (heavy rigid) licence test with flying colours, 21-year-old Lucy Fenner is one of Cleanaway’s youngest drivers.

Lucy joined Cleanaway in May 2021 at the Rokeby site in Tasmania, managed by David Elliott, which specialises in technical and environmental services for liquid wastes. Being a part of the Rokeby team is what Lucy enjoys most about work and she’s excited to get even more involved with her HR licence. “The crew I work with every day is great and I like being able to collect paint and chemicals to dispose of safely and correctly. Now I feel I can be of more help, as I can go on jobs myself in the truck,” Lucy said.

When asked what inspired her to take up HR driving, Lucy explained, “I never really thought of myself as a truck driver until I went out on some jobs and thought, ‘this is actually pretty cool and something I want to do’.”

Having the support of her team at Rokeby made a big difference for Lucy. “I’ve been lucky enough to have Jack White (Packaged Waste Driver) and Jared Andrew (Leading Hand Driver) supporting me and teaching me how to drive the truck. They have taught me some great skills and guided me to do my best.”

Learning to navigate a heavy vehicle on busy roads or residentials streets in no mean feat. “The best and most daunting moment so far was driving on a road that was only just wide enough for two trucks to pass one another,” Lucy described. “The bends were also very sharp and tight. It wasn’t super enjoyable, and it was pretty stressful, but now I have a lot more confidence on the road.”

Lucy is keen to continue developing her driving career at Cleanaway. “Now that I’ve obtained my HR licence, I’m looking forward to learning more skills and knowledge. I will keep learning new things and hope to work towards upgrading my licence,” she said.

When I asked what she would say to other young people considering a career in HR driving or waste management, Lucy says: “Do it – it is such a great experience, and it opens up so many opportunities. I have gained a lot of knowledge working for Cleanaway in just under a year. The people you meet are amazing. I never thought this would be where I would end up, but I am so glad I did it.”
