Continuous improvement for Darling Quarter through optimised service delivery

August 30, 2017

Darling Quarter is a modern community precinct comprised of two commercial buildings, with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia as its major tenant. It is a tourist spot and recreational destination, hosting events regularly with a wide variety of cafes and restaurants and home to the CBD’s largest playground.

Environmental sustainability is a key focus for property owner Lend Lease and its property manager JLL. As the site’s waste service provider, Cleanaway knew it would need strong stakeholder engagement to deliver on the high resource recovery expectations.

At the beginning of the new waste and recycling contract in 2016, Cleanaway reviewed Darling Quarter’s existing collection systems. The dock space was reconfigured to fit two small compactors in the place of several bins, resulting in more efficient and economical servicing. This reduced waste and recycling service costs by $36,000 annually. Less collection vehicles on site also led to improved safety in dock areas and lowered the transport carbon footprint.

The annual CO2 emissions for Darling Quarter has been reduced by more than 7,000 kilograms. Cleanaway also contributed to more accurate waste reporting systems, helping Darling Quarter achieve a Better Buildings Partnership gold rating.

Darling Quarter now recycles commingled materials, organic waste, polystyrene, paper and cardboard. They have achieved a 74% diversion rate and are a 6-star green rated building. Cleanaway will continue to assist Darling Quarter to roll out regular projects to minimise general waste and increase resource recovery.
