Sustainability

Our past has, our present does, and our future will depend on it.

Sustainability is our stock in trade. We’ve built our business around reducing, reusing, recycling and repurposing to create long-term economic value whilst caring for our people, communities and the environment.

As we spend so much time thinking of ways to improve the sustainability of others, we have come to realise that sustainability means more than simply better waste management. Today, we aspire to take a sustainable approach to everything we do; from the way we do business to our work in our local community.

Our mission is to help make a sustainable future possible. To achieve this, we will continue to innovate to provide sustainable solutions to minimise impact and maximise value from the waste we manage. We’ll also be working closely with the community to spread the message of the importance of taking a sustainable approach to everything we do at home, at work and in our neighbourhood.

Further information about our approach to sustainability is presented in our sustainability reports.

Environmental Management

Cleanaway is dedicated to making a sustainable future possible. We do this by providing environmentally beneficial and sustainable services, products and solutions to customers and our local communities that result in reduction, resource recovery, recycling and reuse of waste materials.

Our aim of “Zero Harm” to the environment means that we are continually looking for ways to improve our environmental standards for the benefit of the environment, our employees, stakeholders and the community. We believe that the highest standards in environmental performance are crucial to the success and sustainability of our business.

To assist us achieve the highest standards in environmental performance we conduct our business in accordance with our environmental management system. This system has been independently certified to meet the requirements of International Standard for environmental management ISO 14001, and is underpinned by the Cleanaway Environmental Policy.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions

As Australia’s leading waste management and recycling company, we continue to take action on climate change by reducing our greenhouse gas emissions, by the responsible management of our landfill gas, and by assisting our customers’ and the community in managing their waste impacts.

Emissions generated through our landfills presents the most significant source of greenhouse gas from our operations – they contribute approximately 70 per cent of our total scope 1 emissions. Our focus on recycling, getting more value out of each tonne of waste, as well as our continued investment in landfill gas projects such as renewable energy generation, has reduced our total emissions year on year.

We are equally committed to working with our customers to reduce their carbon footprint, and offer innovative and sustainable waste management solutions to our customers that work toward making a sustainable future possible.

In the Community

The work we do touches every aspect of life in Australia. Whether it’s helping big industry achieve greater sustainability, ensuring hospitals have excellent waste management services across the board, or making sure your bin night goes smoothly every week, we have the opportunity to make a difference 24 hours a day.

But that’s the job we do for the community. What we do in the community is another matter entirely. And for us, it’s just as important as our day job.

We play an active leadership role in educating and supporting the communities in which we operate, and continually give back through investment and sponsorship of local community groups and events.

We promote important initiatives such as recycling within the community and run both school-based and business-based education programs.

Our team of Cleanaway educators develop award-winning, specialist programs in conjunction with our municipal clients.

Cleanaway’s municipal education team engage and educate thousands of children and students each year through our nationally distributed education programs.

Organisations can increase resource recovery; minimise waste; reduce contamination levels in recycling and organics bins; reduce waste going to landfill and improve recycling participation, through our simple-to-use strategies.

To complement our comprehensive schools program, we also run an intensive community education workshop program that enables adult community members to learn about their waste services.

Cleanaway has a long, strong and proud history of community involvement in a broader sense and we will continue to play an active role in encouraging individuals and businesses to recover, recycle and reuse in our quest to help make a sustainable future possible.

Sustainability: Our Way

Great partnerships add up to sustainable success

Across Cleanaway, in every arm of our business, we are always looking for ways to make a sustainable future possible for our partners.

From schools, to local councils, from big business and even the armed forces, our teams go to extraordinary lengths to provide you with innovative and sustainable solutions.

Click below to hear just a few of our stories.

Health and Safety

At Cleanaway, the safety, health and well-being of our people and the communities in which we operate is our first and foremost consideration. We believe that everyone has the right to work in a safe workplace. It’s more than a philosophy, it’s a set of principles underpinned by systems of work that we call “Zero Harm”; which means working in an incident and injury free workplace.

Supporting and reinforcing our values and safety culture are the Cleanaway Life Saving Rules.

The key indicators we use to check on our progress towards Zero Harm include monitoring:

  • Implementation of safety leadership programs
  • Zero Harm Observations of our work activities
  • Employee communication sessions and Toolbox Talks
  • Workplace site inspections
  • Employee and contractor drug and alcohol screenings
  • Internal and external audit programs.

We will continue to identify and incorporate safety and health innovations and improvements at all levels within Cleanaway. This commitment is backed by our senior leaders, our cultural change strategies and our fully documented, rigorous company-wide management systems.

The Cleanaway safety management system has been independently certified to meet the requirements of Australian Standard for occupational health and safety AS 4801, helping us to achieve a positive safety, health and environmental record.

AS 4801 is the national standard for occupational health and safety. It lays down the guidelines and requirements to help an organisation formulate workable policies to address the real people hazards or risks associated with its everyday operations.

Certified System: Quality ISO 9001 Certificate number FS 609175

ISO 9001 is the international standard for quality management. Its focus is customer satisfaction.
