Disposing of Other Wastes

Household Chemical Collection

Old and leftover chemicals around the home can be hazardous to the health of both our families and our environment. The Department of Environment and Conservation has established the Household Chemical Collection service to assist residents in disposing of household chemicals in an appropriate manner. Drop-off centres have been established around Sydney, as well as the Hunter and Illawarra regions, for residents to dispose of old or leftover household chemicals.

Drop-off centres will accept household quantities of materials including: paint and paint-related chemical products, pesticides & herbicides, solvents and household cleaners, motor oils & fuels, batteries, gas bottles, fire extinguishers, flares, pool chemicals, acids & alkalis, and hobby chemicals such as photography chemicals.

Please call the Clean Out Info Hotline on 1300 787 870 or visit http://www.resource.nsw.gov.au for drop-off centre location and further details

Mobile Phone Recycling

Mobile phones and their batteries can cause significant environmental problems if disposed of to landfill. As part of the Clean Up Mobile Phones campaign, run by Clean Up Australia, unused mobile phones can now be dropped off at all Council libraries and at Canada Bay Civic Centre Drummoyne – 1a Marlborough Street Drummoyne 2047.

Donated phones that are repairable and not too old are cleaned, repaired and sent overseas for resale in developing countries. This is a great way to provide affordable access to telecommunications in areas which currently have little modern telecommunications infrastructure. Donated phones which are old or unrepairable are fully recycled by experienced e-waste recycler, MRI. Council does not receive any monetary gain by supporting this program.

For more information visit www.cleanup.com.au

Printer Cartridge Recycling

Australians throw away more than 18 million printer cartridges every year. This amounts to over 5,000 tonnes of material that will eventually end up in landfill. Placing old printer cartridges into landfill can cause problems for the environment.

Cartridges can now be dropped off at all Council libraries and at Canada Bay Civic Centre Drummoyne – 1a Marlborough Street Drummoyne 2047.

For more information about cartridge recycling visit www.planetark.org.
