Organic materials from your garden are a valuable resource. The City of Canada Bay Council provides a garden organics collection service to residential properties. Materials that can be placed in your bin include small twigs and branches, grass clippings, flowers, garden prunings and leaves. These garden organics are then recycled into compost and mulch, diverting significant amounts of organic material from landfill.
Houses and townhouses receive one green-lidded 240 litre wheelie bin, while units are allocated one 240 litre wheelie bin for up to 10 units.
Garden organics bins are collected from houses and units fortnightly. |
The Bio-insert bin

The Bio-Insert bin looks like any other standard 240 litre Mobile Garbage Bin (MGB), except it has a special frame which employs natural processes to reduce the volume and weight of your garden organics. The round vents on the side allow air to circulate so that the material can break down more efficiently, without excessive odour.
The reduced volume and weight of your garden organics in this bin, compared to a normal non-ventilated bin, means you can fit more garden organics in the bin between collections. The reduced volume and weight also proves cost effective for Council and, in turn, residents as disposal rates are reduced.
The effective collection of garden organics enables the diversion of this material away from landfill. Instead of your organics decomposing at the landfill and contributing to greenhouse gases, it can be sent on to be mulched and reused which is better for the environment.
