Continuous diversion improvement for GPT Group

GPT-owned Highpoint Shopping Centre is one of the largest shopping centres in Australia at 159,900m2 with over 450 tenants, a constantly changing workforce and six waste docks. They had a strategic objective to achieve 38% waste diversion from landfill by 2016, but their rates were stagnant at 25% – 26%.

 

There were multiple issues at play, including disengaged tenants, a lack of waste audits, a volatile relationship between the waste and cleaning contractors, and on-site infrastructure that needed improvements to handle the growing waste.

 

Due to the property’s size and numerous challenges, Cleanaway assigned a dedicated Resource Recovery Officer (RRO) on-site to assist GPT. Within 12 months, waste and HSE site safety audits were completed that identified additional recycling opportunities and boosted safety.

 

Tenant education programmes were also delivered to understand requirements and improve waste practices – with a focus on food tenants who generate some of the heaviest waste. Infrastructure was improved to accommodate new waste streams, and Cleanaway worked closely with cleaning contractor, Assetlink, and GPT to implement and refine these initiatives.

 

Cleanaway and GPT are now working to achieve a stretch target of 50% diversion from landfill by December 2017. The focus will be on public place recycling, education and food tenants located outside the food courts.

 

New technology related to onsite waste processing is being investigated, including new compactors and greater accuracy for weight-based data for rear lift services. Additionally, back-of-house segregation units will be improved that will allow major tenants to separate their waste in-store rather than on the dock.
